Risperidone, the generic form of Risperdal, is the most widely used medication within the class of atypical antipsychotics. These medications have been prescribed to treat individuals who have schizophrenia, as well as manic or mixed episodes of bipolar I disorder, and for the treatment of irritability associated with autism.
One active ingredient in all Risperidone medications is prolactin, the same hormone that stimulates breast tissue to grow during puberty in women and produces milk during pregnancy. In a study done by Duke University in 2006, Risperidone was linked to 70% of pituitary tumors reported to the FDA’s Adverse Events Reporting System database. The National Library of Medicine defines a pituitary tumor as an abnormal growth in the pituitary gland, the part of the brain that regulates the body’s balance of hormones, including prolactin.
Studies have concluded that boys and young males have developed abnormally enlarged breast tissue growth, known as gynecomastia, as a result of taking Risperidone. Gynecomastia can occur in either one or both breasts, sometimes making them uneven, and causing the breasts to become tender. Gynecomastia can be humiliating and difficult to deal with when not treated . In some cases, boys and young males have had to undergo surgical procedures, such as a mastectomy or liposuction, to remove the excessive breast tissue. In severe cases, surgical procedures may be futile because the breast tissue will continue to regrow.
Another side effect caused by taking Risperidone is tardive dyskinesia. Tardive dyskinesia is the involuntary, repetitive tic-like movements in the face and body. This is a serious, sometimes permanent side effect with no known treatment.
Other major side effects include:
- Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome
- Heart Attack and Cardiomyopathy
- Neutropenia or Neutropenia Sepsis
- Excessive Weight Gain
