It was alleged that Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiary company, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, illegally marketed Risperdal for the treatment of children prior to being approved by the FDA. Because of this, Johnson & Johnson agreed to a $181 million settlement with 36 states and the District of Columbia for its illegal marketing schemes. Johnson & Johnson also offered to pay the U.S. Justice Department $2.2 billion to halt their investigation into Johnson & Johnson’s sales of its drugs, including Risperdal.
Johnson & Johnson settled a lawsuit over claims that Risperdal caused a male plaintiff to grow breast tissue and suffer psychological trauma following his use of the drug. Johnson & Johnson later agreed to settle an additional five lawsuits which claimed that Risperdal caused enlarged breast growth.
There have been approximately 420 lawsuits filed in courts throughout the United States claiming injuries caused by Risperdal. Of these 420 lawsuits, 130 of these involve plaintiffs that claim Risperdal has caused enlarged breast growth.
