The Yaz/Yasmin family of progestin-based birth control pills and generics are linked to serious medical side effects, including deadly blood clots, such as pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. Manufactured and marketed by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, the hormonal makeup of Yaz / Yasmin / Ocella / Beyaz are all similar in design, with their comparable combinations of estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) and synthetic progestin. No birth control pill before this had contained the synthetic progestin used, drospirenone.
This hormone combination is designed to stop the monthly egg release, preventing pregnancy. The makeup of each form of the drug is slightly different, but all with the same effect.

Off-Label Uses Of Yaz / Yasmin / Ocella / Beyaz / Gianvi
Women with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) were widely prescribed these Bayer Pharmaceuticals contraceptives as a treatment for severe depression symptoms, irritability and tension before menstruation. It was also prescribed to manage more mild hormonal conditions such as acne. Little was done to screen these women for potential risk due to usage of the drug.
There was significant concern that the drug was being marketed heavily to women for a wide range of symptoms and conditions outside the scope of the intended use. These women were being prescribed the drug liberally without prior screening for health issues that would put them at a greater risk for complications.
Multiple warnings were released regarding off-label usage of the drug from June 2003 to March 2009, including alerts about adverse events, even death. These communications stated that television ads regarding the drug were misleading and overstated the efficacy of the product.
