Who is at risk for complications with antidepressant drugs?

The children of mothers who took these medications during pregnancy have been found to be at a much greater risk for birth defects and disorders. This is particularly true of situations where the mother ingested the drugs during the first trimester of pregnancy.

What are the common complications?

Common complications include, but are not limited to coarctation of the aorta; Tetralogy of Fallot; conotruncal defects, including truncus arteriosus; transposition of the great arteries; transposition of the great vessels; Taussig-Bing syndrome and double outlet right ventricle; double aortic arch; interrupted aortic arch; hypoplastic left/right heart syndrome; neural tube defects; spina bifida; anencephaly; chiari malformation; omphalocele; craniosynostosis; gastroschisis; atrial septal defect and ventricular septal defect (ASD/VSD); clubbed foot; limb reduction or missing limb; cleft palate; cleft lip; and anal atresia.
